Yes, Fenster is the German word for window but the entire etymology of the word is much more complicated than that.
It turns out that they coined the term in the German province of Swaziland after Robert Musil rode into the capital on a singing cockroach named after one of the characters on the brady bunch. The singing so distressed the inmates of a nearby high-rise prison, run by the famous Austrian Lieutnant Gustl, first to engage in the interior monologue, that they began, en masse, to toss their toilets, sheets, personal items and, finally, themselves out of the windows whose bars were not close enough to prevent them from squeezing their emaciated bodies through. It is a little known fact.
